The VNU Department of Linguistics and Vietnamese Studieswas established in 1996 from the Linguistics Section of the Linguistics and Literature Department, former HanoiUniversity which has now been renamed Vietnam National University (VNU).As the only department of linguistics in Vietnam, the VNU Department of Linguistics and Vietnamese Studies has its mission to research on linguistic and cultural issues, to train students who will become researchers, professors, experts of linguistics, Vietnamese language and culture, ethnic minority languages and cultures in Vietnam.
The VNU Department of Linguistics and Vietnamese Studies is proud to be one of the leading social science and humanity departments of VNU.Until 2006, more than one thousand students have graduated from the Department of Linguistics and Vietnamese Studies with BA(about 1000), MA (150) and PhD (110) in Linguistics, Vietnamese language and culture, ethnic minority languages and cultures in Vietnam. The Department’s former students are now working in different universities, research centers, cultural and educational institutions, etc. in Vietnam and abroad
The VNU Department of Linguistics and Vietnamese Studies offers undergraduate (BA) and graduate (MA & PhD) programs:
BA in Linguistics(Standards & Honors), with 4 Sub-majors: Linguistics Vietnamese Linguistics Ethnic Minority Languages and Cultures in Vietnam Vietnamese Language and Culture for foreigners MA in Linguistics PhD in Linguistics, with 5 Sub-majors: Theoretical Linguistics Vietnamese Linguistics Contrastive Linguistics Historical-Comparative Linguistics Ethnic Minority Languages and Cultures in Vietnam
The VNU Department of Linguistics and Vietnamese Studies also offers several exchange programs and short-term courses such as: Student exchange programs in Vietnamese language and culture which are in corporation with foreign universities (following the pattern 3+1 or 2+2). Short-term courses in Vietnamese language and culture for foreigners (from 4 weeks to 01 year). Short-term courses in linguistics, Vietnamese linguistics and applied linguistics for Vietnamese (from 3 months to 01 year).
Enrolments in the academic year 2006– 2007: 400 undergraduate students (including 70 students in Honors Program) 200 foreign students on 1 year exchange programs. 163 MA students (including 17 foreign MA students). 42 PhD students (including 12 foreign PhD students).
Along with the training activities, the VNU Department of Linguistics and Vietnamese Studies also puts a strong emphasis on scientific research. The Department's members (with 5 Professors, 6 Assoc. The VNU Department of Linguistics and Vietnamese Studies has maintained collaboration with several universities in the world.The Department ‘s professors have worked as visiting professors or researchers at University Paris VII (France), University of Wisconsin – Madison, University ofOregon (USA),University of Toronto, University of Laval (Canada), Seoul National University, Hankuk University for Foreign Studies (South Korea),Guangxi Nationality University,Yunan Nationality University, Guangdong University ofForeignLanguages and Foreign Trade (China).And in the academic year 2006-2007, there are more than 200 students around the world (including 27 graduate students) are studying in the VNU Department of Linguistics and Vietnamese Studies.
For its achievement in academic activities, the VNU Department of Linguistics and Vietnamese Studies was awarded the Third-Rank Labor Medal (2001) and the Second-Rank Labor Medal (2006).
